Centralized allopathic medicine treats migraine headaches as a symptom that must be treated with a medication. Root cause is not addressed. This is exactly the wrong approach. One cannot fully recover and lead a healthy productive life by managing symptoms. An estimated 800,000000 people worldwide suffer from migraine headaches. If symptoms are suppressed then the unresolved underlying cause will cause more problems. Migraine headaches are a warning sign that something greater is wrong with your health. Take that seriously and figure out what that fundamental sickness is in your body.
I've spent quite a bit of time analyzing migraine headaches to try to reduce the cause to a root. Along the line I have found many interesting things. One of those is the similarity between migraines and seizures, and the similar roles that mitochondria play in those two illnesses. The following papers explain that both seizures and migraine headaches are caused by mitochondrial dysfunction that results in neurological disease:
Mitochondrial dysfunction and seizures: the neuronal energy crisis
Energy metabolism disturbance in migraine: From a mitochondrial point of view
Mitochondrial dysfunction in epilepsy
Mitochondria in migraine pathophysiology – does epigenetics play a role?

From these studies and many more we may not be able to axiomatically conclude that mitochondrial dysfunction is the only root cause of migraine headaches, but we can certainly conclude that it is a MAJOR root cause of migraine headaches. We shall explore this more in this article. It is interesting to note that migraine symptoms are often treated with anti-seizure medications, again showing the close link between migraines and seizures. But what is the role that mitochondria display in migraine headaches?
To answer this question let us briefly summarize what mitochondria do. Most of us learned in school that mitochondria are the so-called "powerhouse" of the cell, which is partly true. What does it mean? That means that mitochondria take electrons from food and from grounding with the Earth, plus light from the sun, and turn those electrons into a form of energy called ATP that is usable in the cell. But they do much much more than that as we discussed in the article Non-Toxic Cancer Treatment. Mitochondria are the control center of the cell. They make deuterium depleted water. They make carbon dioxide. The provide the energy to make receptors for the cell. They make hormones like pregnenolone that we discussed in the article Steroid (Sex) Hormones. They make ultra violet light that is stronger than the sun. They make heat. They control REDOX balance. They are the battery of the body. They make reactive oxygen species. They regulate calcium in the cytosol. They control apoptosis. Most people think that the nucleus controls the cell, but it is actually the mitochondria that controls the cell. So, with everything that mitochondria do we can see why their dysfunction would lead to poor neuron function in the brain resulting in migraines. If energy is not efficiently provided in the brain then the neurons will not function properly. This is the conclusion that much of the literature has arrived at.
The next logical question would then be 'What is specifically going wrong in the mitochondria, and how do we fix it to prevent migraines?' There are two very important processes taking place in the mitochondria that lead to ATP production. These are the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and the electron transport chain (ETC). Many precursor processes feed into the TCA and ETC, and those precursor processes combined with the TCA and ETC determine how efficiently the brain will work. So we are going to discuss these precursor processes along with the TCA and ETC function to arrive at the applicable changes you can make in your life to get rid of your migraine headaches.
Here is a basic review of some cell biochemistry. You eat fats or carbohydrates for energy, and they go through several steps. Fat goes through lipolysis and glucose goes through glycolysis. These processes result in the production of several molecules of acetyl-CoA. This acetyl-CoA goes through the TCA cycle which produces a little bit of ATP along with some NADH, FADH2, and other molecules. This then leads to the ETC where lots more ATP is made. But what if this process gets screwed up? What if inputs from your environment (which you can control) are interfering with the efficiency of this energy production causing the neurons of your brain to become impaired which results in a migraine headache? Lots of things can go wrong due to our modern lifestyle. Mitochondrial function is largely dependent on light from the sun. The complexes of the ETC use specific wavelengths of light for power. When you deprive your body of that light because of your busy and rigid modern schedule then your mitochondria cannot do their job. The food you put into your body may contain high levels of deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen, that clogs up Complex 5 of the ETC. Non-native electromagnetic frequency (nnEMF) like WiFi and phone signals will negatively affect calcium concentrations in the mitochondria due to its interaction with Complex 1 of the ETC. Chemicals in your food like glyphosate will chelate essential minerals from your body like copper which is required in the ETC to activate necessary enzymes. Blue light from LED light bulbs, high insulin levels, allergies, low magnesium, low vitamin B2, stress, poor sleep, and many other things all contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction and migraine headaches. Let's look at these closer.
Light - Every day for the rest of your life you MUST, MUST, MUST see the first hour of light after sunrise. Get outside and get that light. This sets the clock in your brain for the entire day. It gives mitochondria the wavelengths of light needed for necessary function, and it makes melatonin in the mitochondria that is stored for release after dark. Melatonin is the master antioxidant in the mitochondria. The next thing you must, must do is to eliminate or block blue light after sunset. That means get rid of all LED light bulbs and replace with incandescent. Turn off your phone, TV, computer, and iPad after sunset. Or, at the very least wear blue blocking glasses, put blue light filters on all screens, and change all screen 'Settings' to 'Night-Time' mode. Raw blue light from artificial sources severely damages mitochondria and the POMC pathway the was discussed in Light, Electrons, and Water As Nutrition For Quantum Health. Next, get as much mid-day exposure to sunlight as possible without getting a sunburn. The human body is literally powered by light. Sunlight will structure water into a plasma around every biological surface in your body. That water will then act as a battery. Together with melanin that is made by the sunlight you will build a semiconductor throughout the body. This will help to create healthy mitochondria in the brain to relieve your migraines. You must also avoid flicker. Flicker comes from artificial light like TV's, video games, computers, LED bulbs, etc. Think of people who get seizures from flashing lights. This is the same thing at a level that does not cause a seizure, but will contribute to migraines. You may not see or notice the flicker, but your mitochondria do. Get rid of the artificial light, especially after sunset. All forms of nnEMF must be eliminated to improve mitochondrial health and fix migraines as discussed above.
Sleep - Let's move from light into dark. Light and dark go together. You make melatonin from the morning sun, and then that melatonin is released after dark to facilitate sleep and healing. Your bedroom must be as dark as possible. Unplug all electrical devices in your bedroom to reduce nnEMF exposure. Be sure your WiFi is turned off at night and your WiFi router in a Faraday cage during the day when it is on. Use linen bed sheets to reduce static electricity. Sleep on a grounding mat that is grounded with a dedicated grounding wire out the window. I drilled through my window frame to install this in my bedroom. Allow your mitochondria to heal at night.
Stress - Stress is known to cause migraines. Stress drives up cortisol production in order to make sugar in the liver to support the fight-or-flight response. Chronic stress means constant production of cortisol which uses up pregnenolone leaving very little remaining pregnenolone to make progesterone, DHEA, testosterone, and estrogen as discussed in the article Steroid (Sex) Hormones. Your hormones will be a mess with chronic stress. It is a known fact that hormone dysregulation causes migraines. This is especially problematic in women who are menstruating. Raw blue light is also causes over production of cortisol by the synthesis of ACTH through the POMC pathway, and this will mess up your hormones. Caffeine will also increase stress and cortisol.
Insulin - High insulin levels and insulin resistance cause severe mitochondrial stress as we discussed in Healing Chronic Disease. Insulin resistance is a big contributor to migraines. Sunlight exposure will help with this, but you must also change your diet. You must reduce carbohydrate intake and increase saturated fat intake. If you mostly eliminate carbohydrates your body will enter a state of ketosis where fatty acids will be converted into ketone bodies that can be used as energy in the brain in place of glucose. This switch from using sugar as fuel to using ketones as fuel helps the brain transition to a new form of power, and this is known to fix seizures and migraines. A strict ketogenic diet can work wonders for your migraines. A carnivore diet is among the most strict ketogenic diets and has been shown to significantly improve migraine headaches. In some cases, exogenous ketones, like the Ketone-IQ product, can significantly improve migraines by providing the brain with an alternative fuel source to glucose. Fasting, including intermittent fasting, is very effective at increasing ketone production in the body.
Food Sensitivity - Certain foods are known to cause migraines. The most well established foods are gluten, cow milk, eggs, and nuts. There may be other food triggers specific to you. Try eliminating these foods and see how your migraines do.
Nutrients - Nutrient deficiencies are quite common in our modern day of depleted soils and chemical chelators. This can often cause migraines. Magnesium, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, and copper are big ones when it comes to migraines. Magnesium gets burned at high rates when stress is high, plus it is chelated by glyphosate. Copper is chelated by glyphosate at a rate that is 1 billion times more than the rate at which magnesium is chelated by glyphosate. This poses major problems for mitochondrial health. B2 and B6 deficiencies are common with migraines and supplementation can sometimes help significantly.
Gut Health - It has long been known that gut health is directly connected to brain health. Dysbiosis in the gut will produce a great many toxins that will adversely affect the brain and will likely lead to migraines. The easiest way to reset the gut is with a strict carnivore diet devoid of all plants. This will starve harmful microbes of carbohydrates in the upper gut where they do not belong. Usually 3-6 months of a carbohydrate-free diet devoid of all plants will do the trick.
Deuterium - We discussed deuterium in detail in the article Light, Electrons, and Water As Nutrition For Quantum Health. Deuterium drastically impairs mitochondrial function. If you are struggling with migraines then you should consider a deuterium depleted diet. Animal fat has the lowest deuterium out of the 3 macros we eat. Protein is the next lowest. Carbohydrates and plants have the most deuterium. It just so happens that fat contains the most electrons which help mitochondria run very efficiently, while carbohydrates have the least electrons. So avoid carbs and plants. You may also consider buying and drinking deuterium depleted water.
Easy Applications:
1.) Eat more saturated animal fat.
2.) Stop eating all plants to reduce toxins. Stop eating carbohydrates to reduce insulin. By removing all plants and carbohydrates from the diet you will reset the gut microbiome by starving the bacteria that do not belong in the upper gut while providing plenty of amino acids and fatty acids for a healthy microbiome otherwise.
3.) Watch every sunrise for the rest of your life. This is essential to provide the red and infrared light needed by the mitochondria.
4.) Wear blue blocking glasses after sunset (or eliminate blue light after sunset whenever possible) in order to maintain healthy mitochondria.
5.) Reduce exposure to blue light throughout the day. Put blue light filters on all screens. Get rid of all LED lights and bulbs.
6.) Reduce your exposure to nnEMF throughout the day. This keeps the mitochondria functioning well.
7.) Get quality sleep. Cells and mitochondria repair during sleep.
8.) Deplete deuterium. Deuterium will make the mitochondria sick.
9.) Use red/infrared light therapy. This will structure water properly in the body and provide mitochondria with a necessary light source.
