Over the past 2 weeks the subject of gut motility has come up 3 times. Let's take a look at it.
Most problems with gut motility are due to dysbiosis, or the wrong microbes in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most of your gut microbes (about 100 trillion) are supposed to be in the large intestine. As we damage our microbiome they migrate to the upper gut, particularly the small intestine. Bacteria produce hydrogen which is consumed by methanogens that then produce methane. Methane slows gut motility. These bacteria and methanogens are not supposed to be there in the small intestine. Your doctor tells you to eat vegetables and fiber, but this is NOT a cure. It is NOT root cause and it will make the root cause worse. The large volume created by large amounts of vegetables and fiber can sometimes be enough volume to push fecal matter through the tubes of the intestine for some people. But it is NOT fixing the root problem. This becomes noticeable for people who go on a low fiber diet and find that they struggle to produce a bowel movement. They think it's because they stopped eating fiber, but it is actually the exact opposite. They struggle to produce a bowel movement when on a low fiber diet because they ate too much fiber at the wrong time of year and they damaged their microbiome as a result. Let me explain.
Your microbiome is controlled by light. Your lower abdomen contains more POMC than any part of the skin. POMC is a gene that codes for a peptide that gets cleaved by sunlight into 7 very important cleavage products that are vital to giving microbes a proper light environment for health. When that light environment is not exactly correct then microbes will migrate out of the large intestine into the small intestine and create problems. This happens when you eat foods out of season. Humans are not meant to eat plants in the winter at high latitude as it was not possible for our ancestors to eat plants in winter during evolution. If you do eat plants in the winter you will not have the proper sunlight to activate POMC to keep the light in proper order in your gut to control the microbes. The microbes will migrate and you will have gut dysbiosis. This will alter the gut-brain axis and enteric nervous system, change important neurotransmitters, and create inflammation. You will slow gut motility from eating the vegetables out of season, but you will think you need to eat more vegetables to force the fecal matter through thus making the problem worse with more fiber out of season.
So what's the real solution. First, you need to kill the harmful microbes that are in the wrong place...the small intestine. The only way to affectively do this is to eat a strict, completely plant-free (fiber free) diet for 4-6 months. This will kill (starve) the microbes that are in the wrong place (small intestine). They simple won't have anything to eat because they can only survive on fiber. The microbes in the large intestine will be just fine because they will eat fatty acids and amino acids. You can measure the amount of methane in your breath with a device called Aire2, and you will notice that methane will go to zero after about 4-6 months. Second, you must eat seasonally for the rest of your life, and you can only eat plants when you get lots of direct sunlight on your lower abdomen. You need to stimulate POMC if you are going to eat plants. You need to give your microbiome the correct wavelengths of light so it can properly digest fiber in the large intestine without those microbes migrating to the small intestine.
To sum up as simply as possible: Never eat plants in winter. Only eat plants in summer when you get direct sunlight on your bare abdomen. Lack of motility when eating a low fiber diet is a warning sign that you have created damage to your gut microbiome.
