This year, parents of over 500,000 students are expected to opt-out of the NYS Tests. According to the East Aurora School District, they justify punishing children because “Recent action by the New York State Board of Regents has placed a moratorium on the results of these assessments being used in teacher evaluation ratings/scores for the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR).” What difference does that make? These tests are age inappropriate, force a teach-to-the-test classroom environment, unfairly rank schools, unfairly determine if schools will be placed into receivership, will be used again to evaluate teachers when the brief moratorium is over, and ineffectively evaluate our children. No parent would subject their child to these assessments knowing the harsh truth about them, yet East Aurora School district will punish innocent children whose educated parents responsibly opt-out of the tests.
The people claiming responsibility for this abusive sit-and-stare practice are Colleen Klimchuck, Mark Mambretti, Matthew Brown, and Christine Cutler. Their names are at the bottom of the letter below. You should email them, along with the school board and Superintendent, to express your disgust. Just copy and paste these addresses: CKlimchuck@eastauroraschools.org; MMambretti@eastauroraschools.org; MBrown@eastauroraschools.org; firstname.lastname@example.org; BRuss@eastauroraschools.org; JWopperer@eastauroraschools.org (clerk to forward email to board)
Parents plan to remove their children from school 10 minutes after these tests begin, briefly take them out of the building, and then return them to the school office with a book to read. The child is not allowed to sit for the make-up test once they enter the original test environment and leave. Parents should notify the media that they are removing their children from school on those days so that interviews can be conducted outside of the school.
Parents from across the state will converge on East Aurora and protest together in front of district buildings if the policy is not changed.
Parents will not allow their children to be used as political hostages.
