Commission Elia’s Survey Indicates Opt-Outs Will Rise Based on Standards Dissatisfaction Alone

Last April, parents of 240,000 NYS students opted-out of State tests (about 20%).  The main reasons include the toxic connection between student test scores and employee/building evaluations, the excessive administration of tests in general, the overreliance on testing, the invasive collection of private student data, and the shift toward an attack on public schools.

But a new survey administered by Commissioner Elia and the NYS Education Department also reveals that now only 71% of respondents are satisfied with the Common Core Standards themselves.  This indicates that, with 29% dissatisfied with the standards alone, opt-out numbers will rise by 9% without even considering dissatisfaction with testing, evaluations, data collection, and the attack on public schools.

Until now, the standards themselves have been the least worry, but with 29% of respondents now admitting dissatisfaction with the standards alone, opt-out numbers will rise faster than ever.  This, coupled with thousands of parents educating other parents about the toxic nature of testing and the attack on public education, will likely lead to a half million students refusing NYS tests next Spring.

The first thing that is brought up is the evaluation piece. That is the problem of the teacher's union and NYSED. I am not boycotting because of that AT ALL. I am concerned with the type of education my son is receiving. Teachers have the MOST representation in NYS and can fight the eval battle on their own. Focus on the amount of testing and test prep and you may garner more support.

You can't complain about the amount of testing and NOT APPR. They are linked , it doesn't matter if standards are good or bad if someone's job is based on it you are going to get test prep NOT education .

We have had standardized tests in NYS a LOT longer than APPR. http://www.p12.nysed.gov/assessment/timeline-historyrev.pdf
It never became a boycott issue until the evaluations were tied to results.

And I simply noted that if Eric shifts his campaign speech to one not about teacher evaluations, he may garner more support. It's up to NYSUT and legislators to change APPR.
